Related Fullscreen Buys Online Video Pioneer Rooster Teeth Austin-based Rooster Teeth said in a blog post that Oum had suffered a severe allergic reaction during a routine medical procedure last month that left him in a coma. Thanks to this show, I now know that maybe someday, if I miraculously get the opportunity to make my own show, there is a chance I could help revitalize this style.Monty Oum, director of animation for online-video pioneer Rooster Teeth and creator of the hit online series RWBY, died Sunday. Even if it wasn't, I have to thank the animators for revitalizing my confidence. Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if there was some influence wow I was hit with nostalgia. Now the speed of the characters in that fight are much faster than what we see in Meta Runner, but the choreography and flow itself is so similar. Specifically everything before the 57 minute mark is what he animated, and if you watch beyond the 57 minute mark you will see the massive change between the choreography pace and speed. It was Monty Style! Of course it wasn't exactly Monty Style, one big difference being that the action in the Tempest Arc was much slower in speed, but the flow and acrobatics was the same!Īs an example here is a link to the RvB fight scenes animated by Monty Oum. Wow, I mean when I saw the choreography the movements the seamless flow from action to action the flashy acrobatics/parkour. until I came across Meta Runner's Tempest arc. However as I am not an animator I always wondered whether or not Monty Style was really something so hard and complicated that Monty's passing really spelled the end of any hope of the style appearing in any 3D animated Web show.Īnd as someone who wants to create and write their own show with Monty Style as part of their vision, it honestly made me worry about whether or not I would be able to recruit animators that could achieve that style. Of course this is an enormous over simplification of a ver complicated situation involving loss, time, budget, and a million other factors that I just can't get into right now.

However to stay relevant to this post, something most fans that maintained positive views of the show discerned that Monty's animation style and technique was simply too hard to replicate, especially when the only two animators that could replicate the style at the time Shane Newville and Dillon Goo left Rooster Teeth (the company that produced both shows), everyone pretty much agreed that the style of the show would be forever changed. To this day the topic of the animation choreography for RWBY is something still talked about a lot. Having said that, RWBY's fight scenes are no longer in the same style as Monty's animation, or Monty Style as I like to dub it. They aren't bad by any means, I had fallen off of RvB but RWBY does still have great fight scenes. Unfortunately this talented man passed away about 5-6 years ago and since then the fight choreography and animation for both shows had changed. He was known for making amazing fight animations with groundbreaking choreography. There was an animator named Monty Oum who created a show called RWBY and animated for some seasons of a show called Red VS Blue. So when I first binged this show, something that immediately took me off guard was the choreography in the magical battle royal game at the end of the season.
